How to use Sodium Hypochlorite on Paving/Block Paving
SAFETY FIRST:
DO NOT use this product on lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable plots or around trees and shrubs.
Safety eye goggles, boots, overalls, gloves should be worn when using this product – FULL PPE should be worn. Any exposed clothes should ideally be destroyed after.
Adequate ventilation is required when using chemicals in confined spaces.
Do not expose to naked flame, cigarettes and other sources of ignition
Keep away from pets and other animals from treated areas for at least 2 days.
DO NOT DRINK/INGEST.
DO NOT allow contact with skin. If the liquid comes in contact with skin it may irritate. Wash off immediately with plenty of cold water.
Fumes from Sodium Hypochlorite could cause coughing, irritation and extreme cases could cause blistering and burning of the skin.
Keep away from Acids.
Exposure to Sodium Hypochlorite can cause the following symptoms:
Coughing from fumes
Irritation, blistering and burning when in contact with skin
Stomach and abdominal pain if ingested
Care from exposure:
Seek immediate medical assistance
DO NOT make someone throw if they have ingested Sodium Hypochlorite – it will burn as the liquid comes back up. Do not give water or milk to swallow unless directed by a medical professional.
If in contact with the skin or eyes, flush for at least 15 minutes with cold water.
For those who have inhaled any toxic fumes due to exposure, move them immediately to fresh air.
This product, especially when used neat could be corrosive to certain metals such as brass (aluminium, naval and silicon) bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, Hastelloy, Inconel, nickel, stainless steels (types 304/347, 316 and 400 series) and silicon copper. Concentrated sodium hypochlorite is corrosive to most metals, including aluminium, copper, brass, bronze, carbon steel, Hastelloy, Inconel, lead, Monel, nickel and stainless-steel type 400 series. Sodium hypochlorite solutions are not corrosive to tantalum, titanium and zirconium. Dilute solutions are not corrosive to Hastelloy C/C-276 (10%), Incolloy (5%) and high silicon iron.
Corrosivity to Non-Metals:
Sodium hypochlorite solutions attack some plastics (such as nylon, Bisphenol A-fumarate and isophthalic polyesters), elastomers (such as soft rubber, neoprene and nitrile Buna-N) and coatings (such as coal tar epoxy, epoxy and vinyls).
Sodium hypochlorite solutions do not attack acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), Butyl rubber, isoprene, hard rubber, natural rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, Teflon and Viton.
DILUTION:
The dilution will depend on the type of paving, but as a general use we discuss with standard paving (natural stone or concrete) and block drives.
Assistance with a brush is highly recommended as it will help reduce the amount of applications required on stubborn stains.
Start-up mix: Three parts water to one part Sodium
Stubborn Mix: For use on areas showing considerable amount of moss/algae/stains an initial dilution of two parts water and one part Sodium.
Neat application: Sodium Hypochlorite can be used neat too, though this is not always advised.
SAFETY NOTE: ALWAYS ADD THE SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE TO WATER.
APPLICATION:
It is highly recommended that you test a small patch before full use of Sodium Hypochlorite.
The Sodium Hypochlorite can be applied via a watering can, or simply by preparing the liquid in a bucket and swilling it over the surface. Leave it to work for a few minutes and then rinse off with plenty of clean water.
The Sodium Hypochlorite will be effectively neutralised by dilution and by contact with soils and other surfaces.
When using a brush or power washer please take care of splashes and spill.

When using flammable materials; cigarettes, naked flames and other sources of ignition should be carefully controlled.
KEEP AWAY FROM ACIDS.
Any clothing that is contaminated with chemicals should be disposed of safely.
When using any chemicals, care must be taken not to damage, contaminate or stain any adjoining materials, landscaping or finishes.
Care must be taken to protect personnel operating in the area of the cleaning from any injury or hazard created by the cleaning. The appropriate First Aid must be available.
